What happens at a
screening?
A screening may take place in a CDS office or at a provider’s
office. Parents come with their child to screening. Screenings may cover:
- Cognition (thinking and understanding)
- Speech and language
- Social and emotional
- Fine motor and sensory skills
- Gross motor skills
- Hearing
- Vision
The provider gathers information from a number of sources including:
- Asking parents questions about the child’s abilities and
needs.
- Observing the child.
- Screening questions (they may call them “tools” or “instruments”).
- Information
from the referral source, if other than the parent.
What happens after the screening?
- There may be no concerns.
- The provider may recommend screening again
after a period of time.
- The provider may recommend an evaluation.
