What happens at a screening?

A screening may take place in a CDS office or at a provider’s office. Parents come with their child to screening. Screenings may cover:

  • Cognition (thinking and understanding)
  • Speech and language
  • Social and emotional
  • Fine motor and sensory skills
  • Gross motor skills
  • Hearing
  • Vision

The provider gathers information from a number of sources including:

  • Asking parents questions about the child’s abilities and needs.
  • Observing the child.
  • Screening questions (they may call them “tools” or “instruments”).
  • Information from the referral source, if other than the parent.

What happens after the screening?

  • There may be no concerns.
  • The provider may recommend screening again after a period of time.
  • The provider may recommend an evaluation.
