1.  Community Block Grants

Community Block Grants provide several million dollars to Maine communities annually.  Funds can be used to assess needs and to improve private or rental housing in your town or community. These grants may also be used to improve public buildings.  Seventy percent of the grant is used to support activities of persons of low to moderate incomes. To see if your community currently has a community block grant for housing assistance and to find out how you can access this funding, contact your town office. 

If your town does not have a Community Block Grant, encourage them to apply for one. Talk to members of the town council or board and give them the phone number and website listed below.

2.  Community Action Programs

Community Action Programs (CAP) often provide funding for housing improvements. It depends on the particular CAP agency and their priorities in any given year. Contact your regional CAP to see if there are funds that may be utilized.

3. Maine Housing Building Materials Exchange (BME)

The BME is a non-profit housing organization headquartered in Portland. It assists families in need through social services agencies, churches, and non-profit organizations. They solicit donations of new, used, discarded and surplus building materials and related items, from manufacturers, suppliers, building/demolition contractors, and others.

4.  Community Service Organizations

Many community service organizations offer assistance with a variety of supports including minor home modification. Consider contacting community organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Telephone Pioneers of America, scout troops, churches, civic organizations (the Knights of Columbus, Masons, Shriners, Kiwanis, Elks, etc.) and schools and colleges that have offer community service programs.
