1.  The Specially Adapted Housing Grant

Veterans who have specific service related disabilities may apply for a grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to build a new home or modify an existing home to meet the veteran's needs.  There is no time limit or deadline for applying for the specially adapted housing benefit.  An eligible veteran may receive a VA grant of not more than 50% of the cost up to a maximum of $48,000.

An eligible veteran can use the grant in any of the following ways:

  • to build a home on land to be acquired for that purpose.
  • to build a home on land already owned if it is suitable.
  • to modify an existing home if it can be made suitable.
  • to pay for part of the cost of the specially adapted home or new modifications.

Eligibility

The grant is available to veterans with service-connected, permanent, and total disability due to one of the three following conditions:

  • the loss of use of both legs or,
  • blindness in both eyes, plus loss of use of one leg or,
  • the loss of use of one leg together with (1) a disease or injury, or (2) the loss of use of one arm, and the veteran is not able to use braces, crutches, canes, or a wheelchair.

2. Home Improvementand Structural Alterations (HISA)

An eligible veteran may be entitled to the HISA benefit that has a maximum limitation of $4,100 for a service-connected disability and $1,200 for a non-service-connected disability. A veteran may not be eligible for both benefits.  The Prosthetics and Sensory Aids Service at the Veterans' Administration (VA) health care facility administer this fund.
