What is a Browser?

To use the Internet, you need a computer with a modem, an account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP), and a piece of software called a Browser. A modem can be inside the computer or, if it’s an older computer, it could be a separate and connected to the computer. In either case, the modem needs to be connected to a telephone line or a cable line in order to access the World Wide Web. A browser is a software program that provides a way to look at and interact with the information on the World Wide Web. Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer are the two best known browsers. Many people also use "portal services" such as AOL. These services operate portal sites that add other features to the basic Internet. If your computer doesn’t have a browser, you can download it (transfer from a website to your computer) for free. For instance, Microsoft Internet Explorer can be down loaded from http://microsoft.com/downloads.
