How to Search

Searching for something on the Internet is both very easy and very hard to do. The first thing you do is to click on the Search button. This will open a small window to the left side of the page.

Here you will find another type of site listed. This is called a search engine. Very simply put, the search engine uses ‘key words’ to hunt the web for topics that might be of interest to you.

There are two basic types of search engines. The first is a true search engine that checks for the words that you type into it. The second type is often called a search engine, but is actually a directory. The directory site chooses sites to categorize in interest groups. Both of these methods can be useful. For the beginning user, a directory makes results faster and is easier to use. Even the most experienced web users often check a directory before starting a deeper search. Some sites, like Yahoo, are directory sites that also give you the choice of a more advanced search if you don’t find what you need.

To see a list of some search engines, and to select the way in which searches are organized, click on the Customize button on the Search bar.

Another search engine to try is www.google.com. Type this into your browser’s address line. When the window appears, type any word or topic of interest into the search box and hit the Enter button. Choose a narrow topic. The word “Disabilities” is very broad and will produce thousands of results. Try “Disability Services Maine” or even “Disability Services Machias Maine.” Type your home town’s name and see the results.
