The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI)

The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) offers respite care for adults with mental illness. It is for planned respite care and not for clinical or crisis services of any kind.  The adult consumer must be living with family members or an unpaid caregiver. Information about the consumer's needs, difficulties, and treatment must be provided when applying for respite services.

Respite providers at NAMI are not therapists or crisis workers; however, they have experience working with persons with mental illness. NAMI will give you a listing of respite providers who you can contact, interview, and select.

The number of hours of respite allocations varies by family, but NAMI reports that they offer @ 7,000 hours of respite in Maine per year.

Eligibility

  • 18 years of age or older with a mental illness and living with a family member or other unpaid caregiver
  • Consumer must have a current crisis plan in place
