Preparing for Adapting Your Vehicle
When
looking for information about adapting your vehicle, be sure to check
whether the funding or charges include both the purchase and the installation
of the devices. Things to consider:
- If you
carry private health insurance or workers' compensation, check if adaptive
devices and vehicle modifications are covered.
- If you
want to purchase a new vehicle, some vehicle manufacturers have a rebate
for modified vehicles. Ask the dealer.
- Call
the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) for the current rules about how the
purchase of adaptive equipment qualifies as a medical deduction.
- If you receive state
services through the Department
of Health and Human Services, the cost of vehicle adaptation equipment
can be included in calculating your co-payment.
- Maine
does not waive the sales tax on adaptive equipment used in vehicle modification.
Driver Evaluation
The
first step in considering purchasing adaptive driving equipment or altering
your vehicle is to complete a driver evaluation. An evaluation might
include assessment of the following:
- vision;
- muscle
strength;
- flexibility;
- range
of motion;
- coordination
and reaction time;
- judgment
and decision making abilities; and
- your
ability to drive with adaptive equipment.
Alpha
