This art site is interesting because the Dayton Art Institute developed
it to make their collection accessibly to everyone online! Each piece
of art has an "image alternative" that includes a description
and image enlargement capability. Check it out.
Adapting
Fishing and Hunting for Persons with Disabilities
-
Maine's Inland Fisheries and Wildlife office explains adaptable hunting
and fishing.
Camp Waban - This
summer program offers summer day camp or residential camp for children
or adults with disabilities. It is located in Sanford, ME.
Center for
Therapeutic Recreation - This
organization offers aquatics, horseback riding, Rent-a-Recreator, adult
social recreation, and leisure assessments for people with disabilities. Challenger Baseball League - Greater
Portland baseball league for boys and girls with disabilities.
Creative Work Systems - Creative
Work Systems provides services to people with disabilities in York, Cumberland,
Adroscoggin, Sagadahoc, Kennebec, Franklin and Oxford counties. They
provide evening art programs and community access programs.
Early
Childhood Information Clearinghouse -
This site explains the importance of having accessible playgrounds for
children, universal accessibility, and the therapeutic importance of play.
The
Enabled RVer -
This site offers information to people who enjoy the sport of RVing and
traveling the country. Discusses tips to purchasing an accessible RV,
among other things.
Equest - This program located
in Lyman, ME provides therapeutic horseback riding for individuals with
disabilities.
Fiddlehead Center for the Arts -This
Maine-based site provides an alternative for children after school
where they can develop their individual interests in the arts.
Flying
Changes -
This is a center for therapeutic horseback riding located in Topsham,
ME for children and adults with disabilities to experience horseback riding.
Guidelines
for Safe, Accessible Playgrounds -
This site has great recommendations on how to build a completely accessible
playground for children with all types of disabilities.
Hearts
and Horses -
This program located in Buxton, ME provides therapeutic horseback riding
for individuals with varying disabilities in both their indoor and outdoor
rings.
Howard Sports - Located
in Saco and Topsham, Howard Sports offers a variety of indoor sports
opportunities, plus a video arcade and concession stand. They are handicapped
accessible.
Ice
Sports for Persons with Disabilities - This
program is called Rink Link and it's sponsored by Alpha One in Maine.
It promotes ice sports for people of all age and abilities.
Inside
Out Playground - This
Waterville based program has an indoor playground that is 100% accessible
for children
ages 0-8.
Kent Stables - Therapeutic
horseback riding located in Gorham, ME. Ladawn Quarter Horses - Therapeutic
horseback riding located in Biddeford, ME. Maine Accessible Adventures - This
Maine-based site offers locations of accessible rock climbing, cross-country
skiing, alpine skiing, and camping among other sports.
Maine
Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife - This Maine
state site explains how to receive a fishing and/or hunting permit for
an individual with permanent physical disabilities.
Maine
Handicapped Skiing -
They offer free adaptive outdoor recreation programs to individuals with
physical disabilities who are ages six and over. Winter programs include
adaptive down hill and cross country skiing, snowshoeing and snowboarding
and take place in January through March at Sunday River Ski Resort, Sugarloaf/USA
and Pineland Farms. Summer sports include canoeing, kayaking, adaptive
cycling and golf and are offered throughout Maine in June through September.

National
Theatre Workshop of the Handicapped

The NTWH offers classes and workshops in Belfast, ME. They also have a
studio in New York.
Natural
Motion Martial Arts -
This group is based in Scarborough and provides adaptive karate services
for individuals with disabilities all over the state of Maine. Sensei
Shawn Withers is a young man who had a stroke at the age of 18 and has
now begun this venture.
Nature Trek -
A recreational group based in Naples, ME that provides four season accessible
outdoor adventures for adults with disabilities.
Northeast
Passage - A New Hampshire based organization that provides
recreational activities to individuals with disabilities. They have a
wide variety of resources related to recreation, independent living, and
assistive technology.
One
Step Further - This program
is based in New Hampshire and offers recreational therapy services to
children with varying disabilities.
Pine
Tree Camp - This is a program of the Pine Tree Society that
is an extraordinary summer camp for children and adults with physical
and/or developmental disabilities. There is a new off-season program that
provides affordable recreational opportunities for people with disabilities
and their families and friends.
Port Resources - This
organization offers recreational opportunities for people with developmental
disabilities for all ages in Southern Maine.
Portland
Connections Calendar -
This is a listing of available, low-cost recreation opportunities in the
Greater Portland area. Similar sites are being developed for other parts
of the state. Check back!
Project
ACTION Accessible Traveler’s Database -
Choose the state and city on this listing to plan your visit and view
all transportation services available there. Includes travel agencies
specializing in travel arrangements for persons with disabilities. This
database is on the Easter Seals site which keeps changing! If the link

Foundation - This Maine
organization offers non-competitive martial arts as well as wilderness
education to people of all abilities.
Scuba
Diving- This
program is called Open Waters and it's sponsored by Alpha One in
Maine. It promotes scuba diving for people with disabilities.
Spiral
Arts - An organization that
incorporates the arts into the lives of all individuals.
Stepping Back Into Life -
Written by a Maine resident with two above-the-knee amputations, this website
is dedicated to supporting people who are physically disabled. This website
has been established to inspire and educate anyone who faces being physically
challenged.
Teen Adventure -
This is an adventure-based counseling program for adolescents 12-19 living in
Maine.
VSA
arts of Maine -
VSA arts of Maine is a non-profit organization that provides educational
arts opportunities by, with and for people with disabilities and at risk.

- This site
offers a variety of companies who provide accessible playground equipment.
They are listed both by manufacturer, and by type of equipment you are
looking to purchase.
Yoga for
the Special Child - This
site gives information about teaching Yoga to infants and children with
cerebral palsy, down syndrome, learning disabilities, and attention deficit
disorder.
Zero Gravity Diving Center - This
organization is based in Maine and offers the fundamentals of scuba diving
for individuals with disabilities as well as an adaptive equipment retail
